Would be nice to see Roman seminarians again wear this special garment of distinction. The little extras count. Once yours truly saw a cleric wearing one.
I remember reading that it is a Roman custom. However, I cannot really find any old photos of seminarians wearing a mantellone. Would it have been worn over the house cassocks for those attending different pontifical colleges? Do any clerical tailors make these any more?
I read that it was a Roman custom...does this mean only in Rome? I have not found too many photos of seminarians wearing the mantellone. Is this worn over the house cassock for ordinary day use, or is it a ceremonial garb? I cannot imagine wearing this rather than a surplice when in choir.
What's the title of book?
ReplyDeleteClerical Dress and Insignia of the Roman Catholic Church by Rev. Henry J. McCloud (The Bruce Publishing Company: Milwaukee, 1948).

ReplyDeleteDo you know if they are making these anymore?
