Tiara: Gift from the East for the Universal Church

Two lungs: East and West.

Peter is "first among equals."

Just a correction - Peter is MOST CERTAINLY NOT 'Primus inter pares'. He is, to quote St. Teresa of Avila, that great Doctor of the Church, "Sweet Christ upon Earth". Christ has no equals - nor does His Vicar! It is the refusal of Holy Church to adopt this heretical statement which has caused the Great Schism to last for nearly a thousand years. He is FIRST. He has no equals! I am rather surprised that you have made this statement. An urgent alteration is needed.

  2. "Equals" don't kiss the foot of one of the group. You should post some photos of the papal foot kissing that was only terminated during the pontificate of Paul VI. On June 14, 1870, Blessed Pius IX kicked off the head dress of the elderly Melchite Patriarch Gregor Yussef while he was kissing the pope's foot. Pius then placed his foot on the patriarch's eighty year old head and said "Gregor, you hard head you!" Such equality.

  3. The doctrine "Peter (or Pope) is first among equals" has been created by schismatics who see in the primacy a pure matter of honour or inspection.
Pope Innocent X condemned as heretical the doctrine advanced by jansenists that Peter and Paul were equal. Paul indeed, and the other Apostles, were submitted to Peter, as to the one Vicar of Our Lord and to the only visible stone on which all the Church stands.

Those were the days... Today mainstream also the catholic one would see this as outrageous 'pride' of the supreme pontiff but Blessed Pius IX' gesture reflects adequately the petrine ministry not today's ecumenical child's talk.

  6. The notion of the Pope as "first among equals" is the desire of the Orthodox in any ecumenical dialog. Catholics who support it, and not the time-honored Catholic belief that the Pope is unequaled, and is the Vicar of Christ of Earth fall victim to a neo-conservatism representative of the EWTN-TV crowd and others who mask their true, Vatican II cheerleading mentality behind a facade of Catholic orthodoxy and tradition.
Don't be fooled. These people are as Catholic as Martin Luther!

Really? Can one be more Catholic than the pope? The last four popes,at least, must have been card carrying Lutherans. The Orthodox aren't interested in creating anything "new." They see novel papal pretensions as the logical fruit of fallen human pride as well as megalomania. BTW, speaking of Blessed Pius IX and megalomania, I assume the readers are aware of the incident where the pontiff had his carriage stop on a Roman street. He leaned out of the window and below was a crippled beggar in the mud. Pius pointed his hand at the wretch and exclaimed "Arise I say and walk!" The poor fellow gave a valiant effort and then fell flat on his face. Displeased, Pius ordered the coachman: "Move on!" Presumably the pontiff hadn't reached the miracle working stage just yet but he certainly was practicing. The diplomatic corps howled about that one in their dispatches.

  8. As the others have said, the Vicar of Christ is NOT the "first among equals." He is the head of the Church on earth and has no equal.

  11. The episcopal consecration of Mons. Gabriele Acacio Coussa.

Blessed Pope John followed the Greek rite ordination (Melchite rite).
