Cappa Magna in U.S.A.

  1. Lovely, I missed the opening of the Mass on EWTN. Nice to see it here. One point, though: I always thought that a Cappa Magna was for Cardinals only. It was interesting to see that Bishops too are entitled to this special dignity.

  2. I watched this Solemn High Pontifical Mass live, on EWTN, and it was truly a magnificent ceremony. It made me long for the return of the Latin Mass I remember from my childhood. One of the high ponts for me was the children's choir singing the Latin hymns: "Veni Creator Spiritus," "Panis Angelicus," and "Ave Maria," while the Bishop vested for Mass. The priest providing commentary for EWTN remarked that some of the older viewers would probably remember the Latin hymns. Well, I'm not that old, I remember singing these beautiful hymns in Catholic elementary school, and I miss them!

  3. I wonder how much tension that the train bearer has to put on the train in order to keep it from not dragging. Not that you would do it, but one good yank (or misstep) and he could topple the Bishop backwards.

  4. It is always better when a little kid altar boy carries the train.

  5. The train on the Bishop's Cappa Magna was reported to be 25 feet long.

  6. Bishop Ullathorne, apostolic administrator in England before the restoration of the hierarchy in 1850 was a very plain-speaking Yorkshireman. He once corrected Newman saying "I was a bishop when you were still an 'eretic". One day during a very grand ceremony, a nervous priest accidently stood on his cappa magna. Without missing a beat the prelate turned round and shouted "Oi! Get your hoof off my cloak now!".
