What do you suppose prevents the Pope from using the Sedia Gestatoria (other than the fact that its use must communicate something about the papacy that the Holy Father does not want to convey)?
Maybe it's todays anti-Catholic revolutionary mindset that all hierarchy and authority (especially their symbols) are bad and must be abolished. In Hell, all are equal.
God intends for human society to be hierarchical in order to function properly. He entrusts rulers with his own power and places them over the people who rule not as tyrants but as loving fathers. We honour authorities such as the Papacy and bishops with special vestments and thrones because then that honour is reflected back on Christ who instituted it.
Gee who was the pope who decided it wasn't correct after 1500 years of use? Oh, John Paull II that's right, the same pope who decided to change the rosary and allow altar girls.
In principle I would support the Sedia's return, but I am not sure that if I were the Pope, an adviser to Him, the Vatican MC, or Vatican security that I would want it. While it certainly communicates the nature of the Papacy and is part of the traditional Roman liturgy, I would fear for the Pope's life if he used it outdoors or even to traverse the length of St Peter's basilica. If that woman who jumped him on Christmas in 2009 hit the men holding this throne, the Holy Father may have suffered dire consequences. I hope for its return, or perhaps the adaptation of a similar piece that is more secure.
The Sedia Gestatoria is just plain dangerous nowadays. The new mobile platform is a much safer and still dignified alternative.
Blessed John Paul the Great did not "change" the Rosary. He proposed the addition of the Luminous Mysteries, which he himself said were entirely optional. Traditionalists seem to either forget or ignore that part!
The new mobile platform can accommodate the Sedia, i.e. placed on the platform, rather than carried on the shoulders of men - something which the Pope will not countenance, in the event that the he becomes more physically infirm.

ReplyDeleteRidiculous this grocery car the elderly pontiff is placed on.
ReplyDeleteIt will not be used simply because there are not enough men with the strong shoulders to carry the sedia.
