Decollatione S. Ioannis Baptistae (Beheading of St. John the Baptist) in Canada

St. John the Precursor reproached Herod for his unlawful union. He was then beheaded. Let this be a lesson for us today.

From the Roman Missal for August 29: "I spoke of Thy testimonies before kings, and I was not ashamed."

The great Canadian, Fr. William Ashley, celebrated Solemn High Mass in the Usus Antiquior at the talk of the town - Vancouver's newest church, the gorgeous church of the Assumption in Port Coquitlam.

Many thanks to the celebrated celebrant, as well as to the kind pastor, Fr. Ron Thompson, for his wonderful hospitality. And to the seminarians from Mission and the fine choir and servers. And to the fine deacons - one who is the youngest priest in the Archdiocese of Vancouver, the gifted Fr. Pablo.

Such a lovely way to end the summer.

And an effective way to introduce the lay faithful to our liturgical patrimony - with baby spoonfuls. In a parish setting. On a weekday. This is how it's done. With treats in the vestibule after.

The raiment of sanctity in this rite is a bold display of Catholic spirituality - and kids, parents, and young families are in need. We have never been in more need of the past. Remember this. And rejoice.

  1. Teach with the Sacred Liturgy!

"Although the sacred liturgy is above all things the worship of the divine Majesty, it likewise contains abundant instruction for the faithful." (Sacrosanctum Concilium, 33)

  2. Is Fr. Ashley still around? I haven't seen him in years since he used to offer Mass at St. Benedict Center in Still River, MA.
