1950s Mass Facing the People

Minnesota always led the new liturgical movement.  Long before he passed away in 1956, Archbishop John Gregory Murray of the Diocese of Saint Paul was the first in the nation to be celebrating Sung Pontifical High Mass facing the people from this same portable altar, placed in the sanctuary of the Chapel of St. Thomas Aquinas on the campus of the College of St. Thomas/STMA.  You can see the old photos in the St. Thomas yearbooks from that time of him celebrating Holy Mass atop this same altar.
