Holy Water Font of St. Peter's Basilica

There are two of them - both, sadly, no longer used.

  1. I can't read the sign over the fountain but in any case, it seems odd to me that "salted" Holy Water would be in a fountain, especially in a floor level basin. I suppose fresh water could be run in to be blessed and the spigot turned off. Perhaps there was a need to catch any water spilled from the crowds jostling through. What do they use in St. Peter's for holy Water now?
