Tomb of Bishop Juan de Zumárraga (1468 – 1548): First Bishop of Mexico

The first bishop of Mexico, and friend of St. Juan Diego.   He was the first one to witness the miracle of the tilma, and the one Our Lady spoke of.

He is also the one credited with hot chocolate becoming a popular drink among Europeans.  A convent of nuns in Oaxaca, after encountering a recipe of cocoa mixed with sugar, prepared it for the bishop (before this, ground cocoa had not found a role in European diets).
