"Pius XII: A Pope Who Knew How to Pope"

Pius X was a Saint, but he was so humble that he didn't realize that he was a Saint.

Benedict XV was not a Saint, but he was perfectly well aware of the fact that he was not a Saint.

Pius XI was not also a Saint, but he didn't realize that he was not a Saint.

Pius XII was a Saint, and he was perfectly well aware of the fact that he was a Saint.

Thanks, Gregory!

  2. It's a joke. Pius XI was quick to anger. Pius XII was just good at being pope, etc.

  4. There is an error in the Latin, probably a typo. For "Benedictus XV non ERANT sanctus" the correct usage is the singular "ERAT". The same is true for Pius XI.

  6. I don't think that Pius XII was so vain that he considered himself a Saint.
    But he was a Saint.
    You can tell the true sanctity of a Pope by the way he comports himself (behavior), and by the state of the Church when he dies.
    Compare the flourishing and solid, unified and holy state of the Catholic Church at Pius XII's death in 1958, to the state of the Church at the death of John Paul II in 2005.,,,and what has been revealed in the six years since 2005.
    And everyone can decide who was a Saint in the truest, purest sense of the word.

  7. I've heard the saying this way:

    "Pius XI was no saint and knew it;
    Pius XII thought he was a saint but wasn't;
    John XXIII was a saint but didn't know it;
    and Paul VI couldn't make up his mind."

    I don't believe this saying or the other are actually meant to be genuine commentaries on the deficiencies or attributes of any of the popes mentioned; it's just a bit of irreverent Italian humor.

  8. How about Leo XIII? He was the first pope to show concern for the working class

  9. Boy, the Italians sure know how to make jokes about the Popes!
    [did I make a rhyme here?]

  10. Might I ask where the image came from. It's very nice, and I'd like to use it for a novel I'm working on around Pius XII. [You can contact me through google, if you like.]
