Wasn't he an early liberal, verging on extreme at Vatican II. I know that he was not known as a lover of Catholic tradition.

A very early liberal. At Vatican II, he asked the other council fathers, "When are we going to have the Breviary in the venacular so that our clergy know what they are praying?"

ReplyDeleteCardinal Cushing was never really at the Council. He went for 2-3 weeks each year and then went back to Boston to raise money for his missions/charities. At the 3rd session he helped push for religious liberty, as did many of the USA bishops.
