Rubrics for Pontifical Masses require [usually] two mitres, out of the three types [mitra pretiosa, mitra auriphrygiata, mitra simplex].
The Precious and Orphreyed mitres are present on the altar in the above-photograph. There placement would be seen at any Pontifical Mass offered by a bishop who, for the occasion and according to the rubrics, made use of the two mitres.
The presence of the two tiaras has me at a loss. Perhaps they have a precious and simple version of those, too?
All gone now...
ReplyDeleteSo depressing.
Why were there two miters and two tiaras on the altar? Wouldn't he just need one of each?
ReplyDeletePaul VI coronation Mass 50 years ago!
