From the Coliseum

Tertullian was right: "The blood of martyrs is the seed of Christians."

  1. Nice Order of nuns. Probably a little Roman congregation. The jackets and windbreakers are a bit stupid looking for nuns though. Whatever happened to the classic nun's mantle or cloak they used to wear?

I remember reading once about Italian Orders of nuns. Before Vatican II, there were dozens of little Italian Orders, some having only afew dozen members, but which always had a Motherhouse or at least a convent in or near Rome. So did the medium sized Orders as well as the world-wide Orders.
The habits, partcularly in Italy and other countries of Western Europe and Latin America were of infinite color and variety....but in the USA and English speaking nations black, white, grey, blue and brown were the only colors.
It boggles the mind to read that at one time, there were Orders of nuns that wore red, maroon, purple, violet, lavender, burgundy, scarlet, green, tan, royal blue, sky blue, and varying combinations of black and white, brown and white, or blue and white.
There were Orders with eloborate headpieces that required tons of starch, and which would have been impossible on airplanes, in cars or trains.
Thanks to Vatican II, all these wonderful religious habits are probably swept away....perhaps a handful are still worn.
But I often wonder that if any or most of these wonderful little Italian Orders which never did have large memberships discarded the habit and traditions like the larger Orders did, their collapse into extinction would be much faster.
I am sure many are gone.
Can you imagine the terrible loss to the Church?

Vatican II....the Council that just won't quit giving bad fruits.

  2. Except in the Middle East where Christians have nearly been wiped out.
