In fact, this fashion was introduced in 1753 in Seville. The mayor's wife arrived to church wearing not the traditional "manto" (a simple and austere veil) but an elaborate lace "mantilla", causeding a tremendous scandal in the city. She was accused of being light hearted and dishonest, even so, this fashion spred very quilckly amongst the ladies of Seville. Even sermons were pronounced against this "excessive, indecorous and expensive" fashion and advocating for the "manto", wich made women "honest, respectable and even independent".
I didnt think her dress was especially immodest. Perfect, no. But today thats pretty darn good. Let's focus our attention on the presence of the mantilla. Deo gratias.
I like the comb she used to attach the mantilla. Good looking and very practical. So would you be upset if I wore that with slacks and a longer sleeved blouse?
The Mantilla was always worn as a mark of modesty unlike the dress this lady is wearing.

ReplyDeleteAn easier question to answer is, "what's right with this picture?"
ReplyDeleteNothing!

ReplyDeleteThis is very tame compared to what else is out there! Let us give credit where credit is due.
I am surprised she is wearing the ivory comb. I've only ever seen Spanish aristocracy utilize this. Very nice.
por desgracia, se dejó las mangas en casa...
ReplyDelete(regretfully, she forgot her sleeves at home)

ReplyDeleteYes, the dress would be a no-no, very unlike the mantilla.
ReplyDeleteto be fair she clearly has just taken off the jacket which is drapped over her arm
ReplyDeleteIndeed. There's one thing VERY wrong with this picture.
ReplyDeleteThe combination bangs - mantilla is a no-go.
ReplyDeleteTake some slides, a bit hair gel and form a nice chignon - the only adequate hairstyle for a mantilla.
Hopefully we will see its' use spread. Women in Church look so reverant when wearing these as an external mark to match their internal devotions.
