The American College of the Immaculate Conception has been here for 150 years on Naamsestraat St.
The present chapel was consecrated in 1893.
Generations of priests and seminarians from North America have passed under this statue of the Immaculate Conception above the main entrance and offered a prayer.

Considering it's radical dissenting reputation over the last 40+ years, the American College, and Louvain University in general, I am sure that this place is 99% empty, if not closed up.
ReplyDeleteThe seminaries of Louvain have but a handful of students, compared to the great days before Vatican II. Louvain has a reputation for theological dissent, bizarre liturgies, and homosexuality.
Very sad. Very sad indeed.
One of the greatest, if not THE GREATEST alumnus of the American College, was the late, Great Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen....now on the path to sainthood. He was a man very much in the saintly mold of Pius XII....and he detested much of what came from Vatican II.
Which, looking back, was 100% correct.
God Bless his holy Memory. Let us hope he is raised to the rank of Blessed before too long....along with Pius XII the Great.

ReplyDelete"Good-bye, Good Men," at least to the extent that it discussed Louvain, was based on hearsay and absolutely rife with ideology, not reporting. Whatever Louvain once was, it is not that anymore. It's theology is no more dissenting than the Gregorianum or Angelicum in Rome.
ReplyDeleteLeuven is a great place. Whoever posted the comments above must have never been here or is a completely uneducated American. As a conservative American student, I study theolgoy at the university here and I can assure you that it is one of the best in the world. I love it here and I am proud to call it home.
ReplyDeleteWhat I would add to previous commenters, in response to the first, is that Ven. Fulton Sheen never attended the American College. He was ordained before going to Belgium, and he lived in an apartment off of the city center. He did say Mass in the American College Chapel on a few occasions, but he went and studied in the philosophy faculty of the University.
