John, the new candlestaicks are hideous, but the old ones were very old, (16th century), and if they hadn't taken them away, they would certainly have been destroyed by now, being petted by 1000's of tourists daily.

ReplyDeleteThe tourists are pushed through the line by an employee who now stands there.
ReplyDeleteThey are more concerned about getting their photo quickly taken than with touching candlesticks.
The faithful no longer even know to kiss the toe; all touch it, most pose for a photo, and then move on.
They're not even supposed to touch or kiss the statue...it violates the commandment on graven images.
