What a Rationale Looks Like

Worn by the Metropolitan Archbishops of the See of Kraków (it dates from c. 1384).

On display in the treasury of the hallowed Wawel; and still worn today for certain solemn celebrations.

The pallium is worn over this vestment which has been passed on for generations (for hundreds of years).

  1. Looks old indeed: the coat of arms on the left that combines red and white stripes (symbol of the Árpád-dynasty) with fleur de lys (symbol of the Capetian dynasty)is the arms of the Anjou-dynasty of Hungary. This family gave to monarchs to Poland: Louis I (the Great, king of Hungary 1342-1382) was king of Poland from 1370 to 1382, and his daughter Jadviga ruled from 1374 to 1399.

A splendid piece of craftmanship besides being a national tresaure of the Polish nation, this object stand as testimony to the thousand year old friendship between the Polish and Hungarian nations. Thanks for the photo!
