What the Cape (Tabarro) Looks Like

In the sixties there was an itch to not be hidebound and to change the color of the grass and so they did away with the red tabarro for cardinals, thus the simple black version seen here.

However, the red one looked better.  Bring it back, y'all!

You can still see the old red tabarro of Cardinal Wojtyła at the Archdiocesan Museum in Kraków.

  1. Sone Cardinals still wear the red cape, as well as alot of bishops still wear the purple tabarro...despite being "banned" by Paul VI's whim.

Surprisingly, alot of the younger ones are wearing it again....along with the cappa magnas and saturnos.

  2. Who is the priest in the black mantelletta? Is he some sort of canon? Is he wearing a pectoral cross? Where was this photo taken?

    Anyone know?!
