Thank you so much for posting this. I was actually thinking the other day that I wanted to ask you this very question since I might get to visit Rome in May.
One of the best guest houses is operated by the Trinitarians: Casa Ferie "Santa Maria alle Fornaci". It is on the St Sussana list also.
Very Clean, great staff, great breakfasts including American cereals...and inexpensive. It is just two blocks from St Peter's. I have stayede there many times. I will be there again in June.
I had tried to get a room at Fraterna Domus for next week, but they are full. I did get a room at Casa Accoglienza Paolo VI, run by the Piccole Suore della Sacra Famiglia. There is no breakfast, but the rooms have private baths, and it is only EU 35 for a single, on Viale Vaticano across from entrance to Vatican Museum. Their curfew is one of the latest of the convent guest houses: midnight. I can't wait to see Rome!
