Rome's Venerable English College

Rome seminary for sons of the British Empire.

The greatest historian of the twentieth century was Christopher Dawson.

Englishmen: read Dawson!

  1. A vast number of nationalities will take offence at this, not least the Scots who were amongst the biggest builders of the "British Empire" and most certainly do not send their sons their as that would be to ignore the Pontifical Scots College on the Via Cassia.

  2. I am sure, considering these "Spingtime of Vatican II" times we live in, that both buildings, the Ven. English College, and the Pontifical Scots college, are just about empty. Beautiful buildings, and what a wonderful history and life they had some 60 years ago!!

  3. Tell them to put the tabernacle back in the middle where it belongs.

  6. Might have something to do with the closure of the last seminary in Scotland, though those remaining seven seminarians transfered to Maynooth it seems...(http://catholicbishops.ie/media-centre/press-release-archive/64-press-release-archive-2009/1488-23-august-2009-36-new-seminarians-to-commence-priesthood-studies-for-irish-dioceses)

  7. Let's be quite clear, neither the Scots nor the English Colleges are full - the Scots College is less empty than it's been for a while, but only because all the other Scottish seminaries have just been closed, and the seminarians have all been sent to Rome - but there are still huge numbers of empty rooms.
The English College rents out much of their extensive complex to lay people, since it would otherwise be unproductive and empty.
    I've been to both recently.
