Rome's Cancelleria: Julius II della Rovere

On the coat-of-arms there is often a pun.

His surname was della Rovere (of the oak tree).

  1. The Palazzo della Cancelleria was built by Cardinal Raffaele Sansoni Riario della Rovere, cardinale-nipote of Pope Sixtus IV and cousin of Cardinal Giuliano della Rovere (afterwards Pope Julius II). Cardinal Riario was vice-chancellor of the Roman Church, because of which the Palace is known as "Palazzo della Cancelleria". The reason for which Pope Julius's coat of arms appear in it is because the building was finished in 1513 under his pontificate. This is one of the finest expressions of Renaissance architecture. It is the see of the Apostolic Signatura and consequently Archbishop Burke can be met there.
