Pius IX ascended the Holy Stairs in his act of penance on 19 September 1870, the eve of the entrance of the Piedmontese into Rome.
Cardinal Borromeo often took part in public processions with a rope around his neck as a sign of penance.
hopefully many such acts will follow around Europe. if someone organises an event like this in my hometown Vienna, I will participate. this is a heavy sin on our Church and repentence should be proportional to it.
The Church needs this "true purification" to be a "credible witness".
