I still think this whole event should have been canceled. Dolan is a buffoon. Just because he dominates the conversation with laughter and back-slapping doesn't mean he's by any means effective. It's a long way from the Spellman days and with the high stakes over moral issues, the Al Smith dinner is too risky and controversial to have - it should be scrapped.
Instead of presuming to be more Catholic than the Pope (in this case, more Catholic than one of his cardinals) may we try focusing on some of the good that has thus far come out of this?
It is reported that this annual dinner has raised $5 million for New York's Catholic Charities; twice the amount raised in 2008, with McCain and Obama in attendance. Deo gratias!
