It is a throwback to the 1970's when it replaced the beautiful and discarded high altar. Unfortunately at this time, though perhaps in the future, nothing can be done.
Jesus Christ in the Holy Eucharist should be front and center, and the priest should be facing Him during the liturgy of the Eucharist and not the people.
