Anello Tirchio

During the Council, on Dec. 8, the Pope gave the Council Fathers each a ring such as this. In my humble opinion, ugly and cheap, but after all, it was the sixties.

  1. Ugly indeed...I am surprised no mention of the 50th Anniversary of Veterum Sapientia on this blog for the 22nd..Love of Latin is so often displayed so well here.

  2. Don't worry about the rings. They are selling them now on ebay. I have seen a gold one and a silver. I wonder which council father put his up for sale?

  3. While I personally never liked the ring given by Pope Paul to the Council Fathers, I think that it is a cheap shot to call the ring ugly and cheap.
The ring symbolizes the Bishops relationship to his diocese. My Bishop wears the Council ring at home and at solemn ceremonies a gemed ring.

  4. I think that calling these rings "ugly and cheap" is spot-on: While a bishop's ring does show his union with the Church, the Vatican II ring symbolises the horrific break with the Church's tradition. An ugly ring for an ugly event! As usual, John, you got it right.

  5. An Ugly Ring for an Ugly time!!! Are you people nuts!!! I consider myself a traditionalist, but I would not want to go back to the Pre-Vatican Church of excussion. Yes it was ugly after VCII, but the time for liturgical reform is over. We have a new translation of the Roman Missal with fitting language to express the extra-ordinariness of the Mass. If the church does not grow and move in the way of the spirit then She will die; plain and simple. Br. Josh

  6. While I agree with much of your taste, I think in all honesty these rings are neither cheap nor ugly. Not everything connected with Vatican II was bad. Most of the bad stuff came with the folks who interpreted it however they wanted according to some fake 'spirit of Vatican II" idea.

  7. This plain gold ring was a most unfortunate break with the past. Traditionally, a bishop's ring contained a large amethyst. The amethyst was used from very early times, and has a deeply spiritual symbolism.

Any bishop who wear a plain ring (except the Pope who wears the Fisherman's Ring) is continuing this rupture with Tradition.

  8. Does anyone know who or what rank received silver rings?
