Eugenio Pacelli with Eugenio Pacelli

Name your kids after popes.

I myself was named after John Paul the Great.  Name one of your kids after Gregory and another after Clement, etc.

This nice guy, Signor Pacelli, was born on March 5, 1939.  So?  His parents named him Eugenio in honor of the new Pope!

He was born near Viterbo and now lives at the port of Rome, Civitavecchia.  Photo taken at Santa Marinella, near Rome.

  3. "John Paul the Great"??? Don't make me laugh. Everything you whine and lament about here is the direct result of this pontiff's actions or inactions. I know its difficult but face reality.

  4. Here we go again with the whole "Great" naysayers. Keep judging...

  5. Marcial Maciel thought he was "great", left him off the hook for years.

  6. Not to worry, John. I heartily echo "John Paul the Great" and pray for his canonization, as well as pray to him, daily. The great holy ones are always persecuted (Ven. Pius XII, St. Padre Pio, etc.). I pray that the works of this great pontiff get a fresh look by those who misunderstand him.

Ioannes Paule Magne, ora pro nobis!

P.S. When I am blessed with a family, I plan on naming one of my sons "John-Paul"! :-)

  7. I have always found it unfortunate that the later popes have seemed to abandoned the early papal names. I am hoping for a Miltiades, Julius, Damasus, Honorius, Constantine, etc.

  8. Mr Sonnen,

I understand your love for the Holy Father John Paul II.
His Holiness helped bring orthodoxy back into the Church after the horrific Pontificate of Pope Paul VI, but Pope John Paul II, for all the good he did, also did a lot to devastate the Church [Assisi pagan prayer meetings, allowing the abuses to continue in the Mass of the laity recieving God on the hand, altar girls, etc] so unfortunately, I would not use the term "Great" before his name.
His Holiness might be in heaven, yes, but he was not "Great" the way the other two Pontiffs who have been given this appelation are Great.
    God bless

  9. Maciel was a master deceiver and manipulator. Blaming Ven. Pope John Paul the Great is ridiculous. Popes are the Vicars of Christ on Earth, but that doesn't mean they are omniscient!

As for Assisi, I suggest reading "My Life with Karol" by Stanislaw Cardinal Dziwisz. He offers many wonderful insights.

  10. If we call Pope John Paul II, Great then we must call Pope St Pius X, Pius XI, Pius XII Great.
I personally think that if we are going to take it upon ourselves to call one Supreme Pontiff of the 20th century "Great" lets give that to a canonized Saint, namely Pius X.

When Pope Benedict XVI, or any succeeding Bishop of Rome calls Pope John Paul II, "Great", than we shall.
There is absolutely nothing "judgemental" or sinful about questioning the appelation "Great" when it is arbitrarily attached to a Pontiffs name.

  11. Pope Wojtyła was an addicted actor. He was often charming. He had and has his groupies who in their idolization of the man are blind to the damage he caused and/or allowed. Does anyone honestly think that the minuscule improvements that Pope Ratzinger has so far managed to back pedal would ever have happened under Wojtyla? If you must name your babies John Paul at least do it in honor of John Paul I.

  12. In che giardino è posta la statua di Pacelli a Santa Marinella? Non riesco a riconoscerlo.

    Grazie.

  14. Geoffrey,
Does the article you site have official Church approval?

  15. Anonymous,

I have not yet seen the book itself to see if it bears the Church's imprimatur.

However things like demonic possession and exorcism are very real, and are not to be taken lightly. When an evil supernatural force takes possession of a mortal body and is repulsed by blessed objects, holy water, and the invocation of the saints... how can one doubt?
    Deo gratias!
