Gregory Peck in Cappello Romano as Mons. Hugh O'Flaherty

In 1983 they filmed The Scarlet and the Black in Rome.

It was his best role ever.

The veiled Tenant of the tabernacle was and remains Christ.  Nice to see clergy veiled in the ferraiolone, too.  So elegant!

  1. The Scarlet and the Black takes credit away from the real hero, Pope Pius XII. Pius XII did far more than what is credited to Peck's fictional character, but he is portrayed as a ditherer and a coward in the movie. It was a ridiculous and uncharitable portrayal that did nothing but promote the black legend of "Hitler's pope". A ferraiolone a Catholic does not make.

  2. David Werling, Peck's character was not fictional Msgr Hugh O'Flaherty.
Also that's not a ferraiolone he's wearing (which comes around the shoulders), but a ferraiolo/ferraioletto.
