Yes, this was all new in the '40s. The historic high altar of Cardinal McCloskey (where Cardinal Pacelli celebrated High Mass when he visited St. Patrick's), was a short time later removed and given to the Jesuits (it was moved to the chapel at the Bronx campus of Fordham University). The old altar was made of precious inlaid marbles given by the clergy of the NY diocese in 1878.
