"Swimming at Ostia, the closest beach to Rome, was also prohibited to the clergy. I always felt sort of guilty as one or two other priests and I left Rome for the beach - beyond Ostia. Before leaving for our swim, we would put on sport shirts and American clerical trousers underneath our habits. I emphasize 'American clerical trousers' because Italian priests wear knee breeches and long stockings under their cassocks. (Usually it is very easy for an Italian to recognize an American priest because the cuffs of his trousers often reach below his cassock hem)."
