Tombs of the Cardinals of the See of Philadelphia

To pray amid the mortal remains of such eminent churchmen.  Legends of our time.  Models of leadership and holiness.

  1. Cardinal Dougherty was one of the great churchmen of his era - 1920s through to the 1950s. He left an incredible legacy of Catholic witness. He was a very big man with an enormous girth which caused people to affectionately refer to him as His Immense rather than Eminence..not publicly of course or to his face as he was very highly revered. He hosted Cardinal Pacelli (Pius XII) in Philly in the mid 1930s when Card Pacelli visited parts of the USA. His death in 1951 was greatly mourned.
