"The origin of the Ambrosian Rite is lost in antiquity, thought it was not known by the name of the great Archbishop of Milan till the ninth century. Some scholars held that it was of Oriental origin, possibly imported from Cappadocia by Auxentius, St. Ambrose's predecessor in the See of Milan, but Pope Pius XI, the best of authorities as a Milanese, a scholar, and Prefect of the Ambrosian Library, considers it to have been the original Roman Rite."
