23 years ago, I used to lector at St. Patrick's Cathedral when I worked in Manhattan (FSSP parish, wouldn't do that now). One day after Mass, the rector at the time, Msgr. Anthony Dallavilla, took me down into the crypt below the high altar where I was able to pray before Archbishop Sheen's tomb. It's an experience I'll never forget.
At any rate, I've never seen pictures of him lying in state before. That mitre is sadly ghastly. Have you found any more shots like that, John? I'd be interested in seeing the vestments in which he was buried.
It is a shame to see that, unlike before Vatican II, bishops are not buried in "full pontificals", id est, violet tunicle, dalmatic, buskins, sandals, gloves...

Wow. Never saw this before. Not the kind of mitre Sheen would have worn in life though.

ReplyDeleteThe scene is quite painful to see, one cannot but feel but pity for this great man who was buried in .... a Burger King hat.
