March 2, 1939: "...Qui Sibi Nomen Imposuit Pium!"

Camillus S.R.E. cardinalis protodiaconus Caccia-Dominioni: "Nuntio vobis gaudium magnum: Habemus Papam! Eminentissimum ac Reverendissimum Dominum Dominum Eugenium cardinalem Pacelli, qui sibi nomen imposuit Pium" (2 martii AD 1939).

Thanks, Rodolfo!

  1. Interesting they put the Pius IX banner out.

  2. I think he was the first pope to appear on the central loggia of St. Peter's since Pius IX; ergo the banner.

  3. #1 Actually Pius XI was the first to appear on the external balcony, indicating he was willing to recognize the state of Italy. Of course, the Lateran Treaty was concluded under him.

#2 the phrase announcing the election of the pope begins, "ANNUNTIO vobis gaudium magnum..." not "Nuntio vobis gaudium magnum..."

  4. I wonder why they put the name Pius into the accusative case rather than the genitive, Pii, and whythey didn't include which number he was. When Benedict was elected, the Cardinal Protodeacon said, "...qui sibi nomen imposuit Benedicti Decimi Sexti." I wonder if this was changed.
