Just because one pope (John Paul II) decided he was too "humble" to use the sedia it fell into disuse. John Paul II was only one pope among many he was hardly great and he doesn't get to decide what is normative for the papacy. EVERY pope before him used the sedia. The Church is in the greatest crisis since the reformation all because he did nothing to rid the Church of evil men. Poor Pope Benedict had to clean up the mess and take the blame all while listening to John Paul II being called great and praised. History will show which of the 2 popes is really great. It won't be the pope who allowed altar girls and the like. It will be Benedict XVI who normalized the traditional Mass again and faced the real problems of the church head on.
The contraption in the photo looks like the offspring of a wheelchair and a shopping cart. That said, I'd be happy to see it in use if our beloved Papa Benedict would only stay on.
I still believe that all the older cardinals, bishops and clergy should be issued motorized wheelchairs (i.e., Hoverounds) for festive processions in St. Peters. They could have little flags or streamers in appropriate liturgical colors making the ceremony all the more fetching. Sort of like the Shriners on motorcycles in a parade. As it is, I'm sure there are many cardinals, bishops and priests who actually could use the device as much or even more than His Holiness but they bravely manage to shuffle onward. The sedia gestatoria on the other hand evokes pharaonic deity worship and of course we aren't any longer into papalolatry or at least JPII the Great seemed to downplay that for celebrity idolization. The next Supreme Pontiff should be very interesting, at least initially. I suggest we fasten our seat belts.
I heard that whenever an Orthodox bishop is installed into his cathedral, they carry him in on a chair. Why do they get to keep their beautiful traditions while the Roman Rite must kowtow to modern demands?
No, the Orthodox buried their bishops sitting in a chair up until the beginning of the century. At the enthronement of a bishop he was only led up to the throne in his cathedral and formally seated as is done in the West.
shameful, this is not the time to be making demands on the Holy Father, rather this is the time to pray for him. Losers like you didn't support Pope Benedict during his papacy, the least you could do would be to show a little support during this difficult time.
Photoshop. Although it is silly not to use the Sedia Gestatoria. Ridiculous to try to appease the hostile press. They would have no problem with this for a UK monarch.

ReplyDeleteJP II was 58 when he was elected. An outsider. He had to win over the crowds. And the hostile media.

Amen. Bring it back. Fit or a pope. Regal.

ReplyDeleteThe SG would not be a security risk if only used in St. Peter's. The jeep can always be used in the square.
