  2. I cannot describe how seeing him affects me so deeply, seeing not only the grand pontiff, but the gentle human man that he was. I remember so well at the age of ten watching those deeply moving pictures of the procession of his body from Castelgandolfo to Rome.
SURELY - Pope Benedict will make a decision about beatification soon. Then I can do what I did many years ago and just sit quietly on the floor next to his tomb. (Jimmy)

  3. Thank you for posting these videos, John.

I was only four years old when Pope Pius XII died, so I remember very little about him personally. But I read up enough on him as the years have gone by to know that he was the right Pope, for the right place, for the right time.

My maternal grandparents, who came from Germany in the 1920s, had for years a papal blessing on the wall of their home that had Pope Pius' picture on it.

And a maiden aunt, whose father was the sponsor for my mother's family when they arrived in America, was in the last pilgrimage group to see the Holy Father before his death. It was while they were on a ship going from Italy to France (Lourdes-it was the centennial year of the apparitions) that the news came announcing his death. And I think Cardinal Spellman was with that pilgrimage, because he had to rush back to Rome to prepare for the conclave.

But I do have to chuckle at the English subtitles-the translations were rather clunky at times, not to mention the many spelling errors! Not your fault, of course; it's the fault of the translators back when these films were made!

  4. Yes, I agree that the English subtitles are strange. I shows how it is not always possible to translate directly word for word from one language to another with losing meaning. This is something that the people who gave us the new English translation of the Mass were not capable of seeing. (Jimmy)
