The Way It's Done: Monarch in Full Court Dress

The King of Tonga, who, as non-European potentates have been wont to do, was dressed in full court dress with breeches, stock, buckled shoes, sword and gold braided coat.

Thanks, Fr. A!

  1. And not afraid of kissing the Holy Father's ring, unlike all the western "statesmen" who are in permanent fear of offending someone.

  3. Sad to hear about the King's passing. Who will succeed him?

I remember the Queen of Tonga, Salote. She was at Queen Elizabeth's coronation in 1953. A rather large lady, I recall. She sat in a open carriage on the way back to Buckingham Palace, in spite of the rain, laughing and waving and having a grand old time!

There was someone sitting opposite her in the carriage; a question was asked, 'Who is that with her?' And some wag came back with the answer: 'Lunch.' ; )
