Ottawa's Old Château Laurier Hotel at 100: 1912-2012

A distinctly Canadian architectural type, the Chateauesque style. An absolutely stunning national style of architecture.

The Chateau-style is of national significance as an architectural type in Canada and until the time of Pearson (it all began to crumble under Pearson), all newly constructed federal buildings in Ottawa rightly had to conform in some way to this architectural fashion.

Would be nice to see more of a constant reinforcement of this architectural image in Ottawa as well as across the country.

  1. My parents, twin sister and I stayed here overnight on our visit to Ottawa in the summer of 1970! Our room faced the Parliament buildings, so we heard the bells from the Peace Tower nearly the whole night. I also remember it was rather small space-wise.

Somehow we got to stay there by going to the tourist office in downtown Ottawa; on all the overnight trips my family took when I was younger, we almost NEVER made an advance reservation!

Thanks for the 'visual' memory, John!
