Blessed John XXIII Consecrates Bishops in Usus Antiquior at Lateran Archbasilica

Just gorgeous.

April 19, 1962.

Cardinal Ottaviani was consecrated bishop during this ceremony. Just think, there are still people living today who witnessed these magnificent rites of old.

  1. And just imagine they were already cardinal deacons being ordained bishops!

  2. Interesting to note that, on the altar for the newly consecrated bishops [ left-side], there is a white-veiled crucifix. Ergo, this ceremony took place during Passiontide, if not Holy Week itself!

  3. This photo emphasizes that this area of the basilica (i.e., on the west side looking east) was where officials (and cameras)were located. Now it is practically unused with everything possible pushed to the other side of the altar in the basilicas. If this isn't reversed in this pontificate I don't see it being done in another.

  4. The crucifix on the papal altar is also veiled although it is difficult to make out.

  5. Could this have taken place during the Easter Vigil as was traditional?

  6. if this took place, as the date under the photo states, on April 19th 1962 then that would have made it Holy Thursday. However, I've NEVER heard of any ordinations taking place on Thursday! Holy Saturday, yes, but....
