I believe that much of the push toward euthanasia is based on a lack of pain control coupled with unrealistic expectations regarding the limits of medical interventions. When my own mother's health was in decline we could not for see her dying from an unexpected condition. Because our family had discussed at length her choices I knew what decision to make and her pain was kept very much under control for the next week of her life. She wanted to die at home and did and our family had medical and community support. All levels of the clergy need to start a dialogue about end of life issues and death. Living well until we die as Catholics is critical.
