1960s Madness: Selling the Family Inheritance

Glad much of this is behind us.

In conjunction with his trip to the New World, the pope at that time sold this episcopal cross and ring (both blessed objects) so as to feed hungry people. It gained him good press at the time, no doubt, with all the right headlines. Today such an action would be decried.

  2. So hoarding trinkets is preferable to feeding hungry people? Quite right it earned him 'good press' because it was the Christian thing to do.

  3. I can't imagine that the Pontiff ever wore the bling - that ring is plain vulgar.
How do you know that they were blessed?
I suspect they were from an exchange of gifts at an audience with an infidel ruler and pulled out of the 'store' of such things for the sale.

  4. I don't think a Pectoral Cross & Episcopal Ring could be classed as trinkets.

  5. Sacred cross of St. George on the ring.

  6. Anonymous #2: Christ Himself said, "The poor you will always have." Even the Church sold all her treasures, it would still not be enough to alleviate all the poverty in the world. You are sounding like Judas, who complained to Jesus when a woman anointed His feet with expensive perfume.
