Does anyone know what this garment signified? It is a bit over the top, and honestly makes me chuckle, reminding me of a summer bathrobe I had years ago. Mike+
Fr. Mike, The fanon is not my favorite vestment either as I think it covers the beauty of the chasuble. However I do find poking fun at it to be a bit odd.
this vestment is equivalent to an amice...reserved only for the pope as you can see...John Paul used one once (i think) and no doubt old Papa Ratzi will bring one out...only a matter of time!
+Mike, some might associate a cassock or an alb with a "woman's dress" but that association speaks more to a problem with the person doing the viewing than a problem with the items in question.
Interesting photo! The Pope appears to be wearing a gothic-style chasuble under the fanon, and behind him it appears there are concelebrants vested in chasubles, concelebrating Mass. Could the Pope be using the '65 Missal, or perhaps even the Novus Ordo? If it is indeed the Novus Ordo then this is yet another picture of a pope (along with the one of Bl. John Paul II) making use of the fanon in the Ordinary Form, a distinctive papal vestment. If so, then I hope the Holy Father also follows this blog and takes note!
Glad to see you got it right this time!

ReplyDeleteDear John,
ReplyDeleteThank you very much for mentioning my article about the fanone.
