I had an uncle who fought in Italy during World War II. He was born in a family who immigrated from Germany to the USA, but was the only child born in the United States.
He participated in the landing at Anzio, and at Monte Cassino.
And he just passed away this week-on the anniversary of the liberation of Rome.
He was also awarded the Bronze Star (belatedly, judging from reading his obituary) for his actions in Italy. He risked his life going into a mine field to rescue a wounded officer.
May he, and all those from 'The Greatest Generation' who saved civilization in the Second World War, rest in peace!
