He forgot his biretta in Ascona when he left for Milan in 1584. Four days later he died.
This relic is located in the Museo Parrocchiale in the Oratorio dei Santi Fabiano e Sebastiano in Ascona, Switzerland.
It is the largest biretta I've ever seen.

ReplyDeleteLook at the little thing above the red shield at the top of the case: the word humilitas underneath a crown. Is this little heraldic/artistic thingamajig something proper to St. Charles? I've seen this device above the altar of a chapel dedicated to St. Charles here at Notre Dame, so I'm guessing it is. Any story behind it?
ReplyDeleteThat is his motto.
ReplyDeleteMaybe family crest?
